The Lambert Longhorns lost in heart-breaking fashion to the Roswell Hornets on Friday night, 62-59.

The game went down to the wire, and a last-second dagger from Roswell’s George Pridgett sealed the victory for the Hornets.

The game was pretty back-and-forth in the first half with both teams going on little runs. Neither team looked incredibly good or horribly bad, and everything seemed pretty ordinary.

Roswell was leading Lambert 24-22 heading into halftime, but the Longhorns had the momentum after getting an impressive tip-in right before the buzzer.

Lambert started the second half shooting well and quieting the Roswell student section that had been heckling them relentlessly early on.

Up until a little into the fourth quarter, the game showed no signs of becoming a nail biter, in fact, not even close.

The Longhorns went into the fourth quarter leading 44-35 and led by as much as 12 points in the fourth quarter. Based on the score and the momentum, it seemed like Lambert had the game pretty locked up barring an unforeseen turn of events.

Of course, things only got crazier from there.

Both teams went back and forth knocking down shots, but Roswell took a 59-58 lead with about 30 seconds left, then Lambert tied the game at 59-59 with about 17 seconds to go. Pridgett drilled a three with only a few seconds left to give Roswell the lead, and ultimately the win.

Despite the loss, the Longhorns put up an impressive offensive performance. The seniors on the Lambert squad led the team offensively, combining for 42 of the team’s 59 points. Will Baker and Braxton Beaty led the Longhorns with 12 points each.

When they weren’t on the court, though, the offense definitely had a more difficult time getting points on the board.

"We’ve got to get better," Lambert boys coach Scott Bracco said. "We’ve got to develop better team chemistry and we will. We’ll fix it.”

The part of their game that they’ll need to focus on is their defense and keeping a balanced defensive unit in the game. Lambert had some defensive breakdowns late, which wasn’t the only factor in their loss, but they certainly didn’t help.

“We just got to get tougher on the defensive end,” Bracco said. “We’ve got to adjust to the game.”
