West Forsyth faced little resistance on Friday night in a 33-7 win over Lambert.
The Wolverines, coming off a big win against Forsyth Central, featured an almost perfectly balanced offense the entire game.
West ran the ball 31 times and passed the ball 28 times.
West was able to move the ball however they wanted because they were mixing up the play calling, and including a lot of different players into the game.
“We put out different personal groups to switch it up so the defense can’t key in on one thing,” West Forsyth coach Shawn Cahill said. “The more balanced we can be, we realize the better we can be too.”
The Wolverines were able to run the ball all night with 129 rushing yards.
Senior Wesley Clark led the team with a career-high 86 yards and two touchdowns.
West Forsyth quarterback Drew Southern went 17 of 28 for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
He was able to spread the ball around well and threw to nine different receivers.
Southern had a clean pocket most of the night, but made a few mistakes when under pressure like losing a fumble and throwing an interception.
However, even when the West offense made a mistake, the defense was able to make a stop.
“I thought we came out with a lot of intensity and enthusiasm, and executed well on both sides of the ball,” Cahill said. “Overall, they did a good job of understanding what’s ahead of them and playing for it.”
Lambert wasn’t able to get anything going on offense until it was too late in the game to matter. They didn’t establish the line of scrimmage, and couldn’t run the ball at all.
The Longhorns ended the game with -1 rushing yard, and only 125 total yards.
When Lambert tried to pass the ball, quarterback Peyton Rich didn’t have much time to get the ball out and ended up taking four sacks on the night.
Lambert did well on defense despite what the scoreboard showed. They held West to multiple three-and-outs, and were able to pressure the quarterback a little in the first half.
Lambert’s defense just couldn’t sustain that type of play since they were on the field almost all night. West worked the clock in the second half, and Lambert’s defense just got worn down the longer they were out there.
“They’ll show up on Monday ready to work,” Lambert coach Louis Daniel said. “They’re a great group of young men and they work hard every day.”
The Longhorns might not have their first win yet, but they still have a couple more chances to chalk one up in the win column.
West Forsyth, on the other hand, is trying to keep gaining momentum to hopefully make a run in the playoffs.
West Forsyth (3-4) will travel to North Forsyth (6-2) next week, while Lambert (0-8) will host Milton (5-3).
