Lambert lost its final home game of the season Friday night, falling 49-0 to the Milton Eagles.
Milton scored the first points of the game on a flea flicker before carrying a convincing 28-0 lead into halftime.
For Lambert, Friday’s game against Milton was the perfect example of how its whole season has gone.
The Longhorns have been on the wrong side of several lopsided games this season, aside from a rain-shortened contest against Peachtree Ridge back in September.
The Longhorns’ 2019 season has been a disappointment given they are wrapping up their worst season in school history with an 0-9 overall record.
Despite this season not turning out the way they had hoped, there is still a lot of young talent on the Lambert roster returning next year for them to build around going forward.
Lambert has a couple of great receivers in sophomore Kojo Antwi and junior Jack Stewart who will only improve as they get more experience.
Against Milton, Antwi had eight receptions for 64 yards and Stewart had four receptions for 45 yards.
Antwi leads the team this season with 40 receptions, 598 reception yards, and five touchdowns.
Lambert’s offense needs playmakers like these going forward because they’ve struggled mightily in putting points up on the board this season.
The offense will also have to revolve around a new quarterback next year since they will be losing their starting quarterback in Peyton Rich.
Sophomore Ashton Smith seems like the most likely candidate, but it will be interesting to see if there is any sort of quarterback battle in the offseason.
On defense, Lambert will be bringing back a couple players that will be great to build around as well.
Sophomore linebacker Harrison Peyton will be returning, and he has put together a great season with more 50 total tackles and nine tackles for loss. Those nine tackles for loss are among the most in the region this year.
Junior linebacker Thomas Tattersall will also be returning next year after having a great 2019 season. He’s had more 40 total tackles and 4 1/2 tackles for loss.
However, bringing back some great players doesn’t guarantee a turnaround season. There are plenty of areas that Lambert is going to need to improve on to be a real competitor in their region in the future.
One example is putting more emphasis on their offensive line. Lambert is currently unable to run the ball effectively and their quarterback gets sacked way too often.
Improving their offensive line could help them finally establish a run game and allow the quarterback to sit back in the pocket and let plays develop.
Lambert’s season isn’t over yet, though. The Longhorns travel to Forsyth Central next week for their final game of the season, so there’s still a chance for them to put one up in the win column.
“This is one of the best group of players I’ve had the chance to work with,” Lambert coach Louis Daniel said. “We want to go out there and compete and try to get these guys a win next week.”
Despite their disappointing 2019 season, the Lambert Longhorns should have a lot of hope for the future with the young talented players that could develop in the upcoming years.
