South Forsyth was able to complete a comeback victory Friday in dramatic fashion when they beat Etowah, 32-31.
The two offenses went back and forth scoring touchdowns in spurts all game long. The momentum jumped between the two teams, and the fans were going crazy all night.
Etowah led 28-19 at the end of the first half, but South Forsyth was able to hold the Eagles to just a field goal in the second half and secure the win.
South Forsyth’s defense struggled the majority of the game. They gave up 287 passing yards and 153 rushing yards.
Despite giving up a lot of yardage, the War Eagle defense was able come up with a couple of key turnovers in the second half that allowed them to put their offense in scoring position.
The War Eagles’ offense played well, but relied mostly on the passing game until the final drive where they needed their running game to grind out the clock.
Kyle Durham played great all night, and was able to distribute the ball to six different receivers. Durham went 15 of 18 for 289 yards and three touchdowns.
However, Durham injured his hand in the fourth quarter during a quarterback keeper and did not return to the game.
Luckily for South Forsyth, they have another experienced quarterback in Joe Slott. He struggled earlier in the night with a fumble and an interception, but he made no mistakes when he came into the game for Durham.
Slott hit Cameron Schurr, who made a great juggling catch for a 61-yard touchdown pass that gave the War Eagles the game-winning score.
Schurr had a huge night with five receptions for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Every time he caught the ball, he was either breaking multiple tackles or showing off his impressive breakaway speed.
“I think we have the best wide receiving corps in the state,” Schurr said. “Some may disagree, but everyone is a playmaker on our team.”
South Forsyth needed a statement win to get them back on track, and this was the perfect bounce back victory to gain some momentum in their quest to make the playoffs for a sixth year in a row.
“I’m excited and I’m just super proud of our kids,” South Forsyth coach Jeff Arnette said. “I told them I believe what happened last week and this week has just brought us closer together and built our confidence.”
South Forsyth is going to need to use that confidence to keep improving and show everyone that they aren’t going to ever go down without a fight.
South Forsyth (2-1) will travel to South Gwinnett next week for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
